F1 Racing is going to be held in Singapore! This will definitely be good for our economy and boost our “image” as a country that can organize large sporting events. Even though some roads will be closed, I think people would not mind walking to the malls around the F1 track just to have a glance of the intense racing of Formula One.

However, taxes of malls and hotels nearby the racing track would increase. I think that the malls and hotels should not increase their charge too much, even though those people that love F1 racing are quite rich. Imagine how the public will think when hotel charge or shopping taxes are unbelievable high? We Singaporeans are known for our “Kiasu-ness” and most of us would avoid shopping curing this “danger” period. All that’s left shopping in the malls would be the rich tourists, and instead of earning more from this opportunity, the malls would lose.

As for the hotels, even though hotels nearer to the racing track would have higher taxes. I do not think the richer fans or racers would mind as it is much more convenient than a hotel somewhere further from the racing track. Fans and racers could just walk to the race track while those staying further away, would have to drive and take transport. Those staying further away would also have to keep in mind that Singapore have quite a number of cars and in addition to that, there would be many tourists in Singapore, resulting in more traffic jams.

Having a night Grand Prix race would not be really very pleasant. As the race track is near quite a number of hotels, guests staying in these hotels would have a hard time resting due to the racing and the cheering. The racers would also have a hard time racing as the lighting would create glare and accidents may occur.

Overall, I do not object to having a night street circuit Formula One Grand Prix race in Singapore, but I think the organizers should resolve some of these issues such as disturbance and lighting etc.
